Then he left & we all heard thumps and bangs & strong words! Poor Santa had slipped on the snow & tumbled down the front porch stairs.Judinoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7263661752187211552.post-54993387120517242722011-12-24T07:23:28.076-08:002011-12-24T07:23:28.076-08:00Father was in charge of putting the lights on the ...Father was in charge of putting the lights on the tree and and all lights had to be evenly spaced and with no two same-colored lights next to one another. He would stand back and "squint" his eyes to see that the lights were balanced evenly all over the tree. If the colors weren't balanced he would exchange bulbs.

Then mother and I would put on the bulbs and the tinsel -- the REAL tinsel, not that plastic stuff they have nowadays. We saved the tinsel and used it year after year.

As I got older, mother got more "creative." One year father sprayed the tree (always a pinyon pine, of course) with black lacquer and we put pink lights and silver balls on it. (Can you remember when black and pink were THE color combination?!!)

I can also remember having a flocked tree and father setting up a rotating color wheel to "light" the tree.

I can also remember the year I stopped putting up real Christmas trees. I was driving down the street on Christmas morning, and all the un-bought Christmas trees in the lots had blown over and nobody bothered standing them up again. After growing up in a household that valued the Christmas Tree so much, seeing these unwanted trees pained my heart.Rebecca2https://www.blogger.com/profile/04672311628641811961noreply@blogger.com
